I consistently see posts on social media where one aspiring writer after another says, “I want to write a book, but I have no idea how to begin.” Well, you begin with an idea, and that idea should consist of the basic genre and theme of your story. However, when I ask these aspiring writers what their genre and/or theme is, they often have no idea what I’m asking.

Literary agents and publishers specify the genres they work with and will not appreciate you soliciting them with something that doesn't fit their mold. Plus, by mislabeling your story and presenting it as something it's not, you will only succeed in showing that potential agent or publisher that you still have a lot to learn. In addition, readers who have been misled will be a lot less likely to give you a glowing review and even more unlikely to return for more.
